A Note About Charities and Coupons

Charitable groups trying to raise funds are often unknowingly drawn into coupon scams by con artists. These con artists will often pay for coupons by the pound. The group may make some money in the short term, but jeopardize their reputations.

Victims have included fund-raising groups for churches, hospitals, high schools, libraries and other good causes. Protect yourself and the reputation of your group:

  • Never buy or sell coupons.
  • Contact law enforcement authorities if someone tries to entice you to sell coupons.
  • Contact CIC or your local Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) before beginning a fundraiser based on coupons, especially if a potential fundraiser seems too good to be true.
